There are many different critical elements to a manager’s role, but arguably the more important is the ability to performance manage the people in your team. This includes:

• Improving performance
• Managing under performance
• Developing performance, and
• Achieving high performance.

Deciding what should happen to an individual when they have not met expected levels of performance is something that many people have very strong opinions on.

Is it easy to agree that tackling underperformance is essential for an effective team and organisation, but it is one of the most commonly ignored, minimised, avoided and played down areas of management. Why? Because even with the best of intentions, it is a conflict situation, and nobody relishes the thought of conflict!

This module investigates how you can manage performance effectively.


To develop knowledge and understanding of performance management as required by a practising or potential leader/manager at ILM Level 3.
