Health and safety is about preventing people from being harmed at work or becoming ill, by taking the right precautions and providing a satisfactory working environment.

Organisations have a legal responsibility for the health and safety of everyone affected by their business.

The health & safety duties of a manager include:
• Carrying out a thorough health and safety risk assessment.
• Drawing up a health and safety policy - this must be in writing if you have five employees or more.
• Ensuring your workplace meets the legislative minimum standards of comfort and cleanliness.
• Recording serious injuries, diseases or dangerous accidents in an accident book - and in some cases reporting them to the relevant authority.

This module explores these key areas of health and safety in the workplace.

Objectives

To develop knowledge and understanding of health and safety at work as required by a practising or potential leader/manager at ILM Level 3.


At the end of this Unit, you will be able to:
• Identify Risks and Hazardous substances in the work place.
• Understand risk assessment and accident prevention in the workplace.
• Explain the duties imposed on both the manager and the team.
• Outline the manager’s responsibilities contained within the organisation’s Health and Safety Policy.
• Identify two ways to provide Health and Safety information, instruction and training to the team.
• Identify the expertise available in the organisation to help and advise the manager on health and safety issues.
• Identify the legislation relating to health, safety and welfare at work, and
• Understand the organisation’s environmental responsibility.
