Basic & Functional Skills

"It is estimated that an individual with good literacy and numeracy could earn £50,000 more over a working life than someone with poorer skills" (www.government-skills.gov.uk).

This is one reason why it is important that individuals seek to increase their skills levels.  In addition, research studies have shown that the skills levels of parents directly affects that of their children, signalling that there is a generational transfer.  The studies have shown that 'by the age of 3, children of the least educated parents were already up to one year behind their more advantaged peers' (NRDC, 2008).

It is vital therefore that both employees and employers strive to increase individuals skills levels in those that need it to ensure that both employees and their children are given the best chance of reaching their potential.
